Driving instructor training with Ignition Driving School

National training school versus independent training school

With regards to instructor training there are two routes that you can take. Firstly, you could learn with a national provider. The training will be divided between in-house sessions and in-car sessions, and you will have other trainees undertaking the same course so you will get buddy support! The drawback to this route is that there will be more than one delegate per trainer. The course will move at the pace of the trainer and not you and you are not guaranteed the same trainer each session so you may feel at times like you are getting conflicting advice. Furthermore, whilst your buddy can give you moral support, when it comes to practising it really is a case of the blind leading the blind!

The second, and most successful, route to take is to train with an independent instructor. This way you are guaranteed one-to-one training and the course will move at your pace meaning that if you are struggling with a certain element of the course you can spend some more time on that skill. It is also more personal and you will also find that, because the independent trainer hopes that you will stay with his / her school and be a good asset to the school, the training will also be of higher quality to that of a national trainer.

About Paul

Paul has been an Instructor trainer for the past 10 years, he ran an instructor training college in Bedford for BSM then managed, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire for Red Driving School before their restructuring.

"The problem with the larger schools that have instructor training attached is the restrictions imposed on the trainers by the companies, in terms of time and course content. They simply don´t cater for the individual students needs, and as a trainer and driving instructor it´s all about what the student needs to gain a qualification, and not about the company´s profits.

Working on a one to one basis with Ignition Driving School allows me to train the students to a higher standard, and to help a student individually, which is far better than having to wait your turn in a shared session, or even worse having to wait weeks for training sessions."

The Ignition Driving School Driving Instructor Training Course

The driving instructor training course is designed to not only get you through the qualifying process but to also develop your skills as a driving instructor. Below is an overview of the training course:

ADI Part 1 Training (Theory and Hazard Perception Test)

In order to prepare for the ADI part 1 exam, the ADI part 1 training course is largely a home study course where we will supply all the books and materials that you need. Also included in the cost is online and telephone support. We encourage the Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) to do as much for themselves and also set home study tasks such as making lesson plans for all the driving subjects, lesson diagrams and at this stage we try to encourage the PDI to become familiar with the correct terminology in giving route instructions.

ADI Part 2 (Test of driving ability)

We encourage PDI’s to start their training for the ADI part 2 test fairly early into their training and certainly whilst they are studying for the ADI part 1 exam. The reasons are that they can become familiar with teaching practices, procedures and terminology. Also due to the high standards that are required it will give the PDI more time to practice and get their own driving to the required standard.

Part 2
(2 hour sessions)
Syllabus
Session 1Course introduction - Assessment drive- Recap on POM, MSM, MSPSL, LADA and SCALP - Introduction to commentary driving
Session 2Recap on previous session - Introduction to manoeuvres (left / right reverse, turn in the road, parallel parking and bay parking) Emergency stop
Session 3Recap on previous sessions. Introduction to making progress and awareness and planning – Use a mixture of roads and where possible use a motorway. Time permitting do a random manoeuvre (Bay park)
Session 4Mock part 2 test
Session 5Final development and work on any weak areas

In order to prepare for the ADI part 2 exam requires a lot of self discipline and plenty of practice and it is very important that the PDI does not think that he or she can have one style of driving for the training sessions and one when they are driving to work, doing the school run or the trip to the shops. From now on it is important to get rid of the bad habits and drive like a professional.

Training for the ADI Part 3 exam (Ability to instruct)

After you have passed the ADI part 2 exam then you will begin your training for the final examination which is the ADI part 3. This is the practical teaching element of the qualifying process and the reason for it being a 40 hour course is that it is very comprehensive covering a wide range of subjects. Also 40 hours is the minimum amount of training that is permitted should you be wishing to apply for a trainee instructor licence. The training will be carried out in car using role play with your trainer portraying the role of a learner or driver on a driving development course. The trainer will come out of role should you need advice or you are seen to be struggling. Usually the role play is carried out in short bursts then feedback given with possible suggestions for improvement.

Part 3 syllabus

Below is the basic DSA syllabus as on the back of the ADI 21T form. This forms the basis of the compulsory 40 hours that is required before you can apply for a trainee instructor licence:
